Local Government is a huge service provider and, with over 2 million people, it is the largest employer in the UK. Here at Enfield Council we employ approximately 11,000 people to help make a difference to the local community that we serve.
In day-to-day terms, that covers everything from the leisure centre you keep fit in, the collection of your household rubbish, the school you or your children go to, and the care of those who are disadvantaged, to the hygiene standards in your local restaurants and shops, the range of reference materials in your local library, the condition of your roads, pavements and parks, art galleries and museums, and local housing and planning. And that's a long way from being a complete list of the services and resources that we provide.
Local government affects every aspect of our lives and provides the framework around which the local community can grow, develop a unique sense of identity and help develop the potential of each and every resident and visitor.
It takes all sorts of people to make local government work. People with an incredible variety of skills, experience, knowledge and understanding. With over 600 occupations and thousands of different job titles, there's a career for everyone. Provided, of course, that you have the dedication, commitment, community spirit and customer service skills to make a positive difference to the many thousands of people who will be relying on you.
Over the coming pages we'll illustrate the kind of variety you'll experience working for Enfield Council, outline the responsibilities you'll be expected to accept and try to give you a sense of just how rewarding it can be to serve the community of which you are an important part.
