Background

The School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering is one of the most research active schools at City, both in terms of publication numbers and research income. The school contributed decisevely to City's excellent results in The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, an exercise to assess research quality at all UK higher education research institutions. The REF rated 75.7% of City's submissions as being of world-leading 4* (23.3%) and internationally excellent 3* (52.4%) quality. Almost identical percentages were obtained for reserach in the Department of Mathematics.

The Department of Electrical Engineering has recently been awarded a research grant by The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) on “EMPHASIS (EconoMical, PsycHologicAl and Societal Impact of RanSomware)”, under the supervision of Professor Tom Chen, PI for the project. This is an interdisciplinary project to study ransomware as a growing cyber crime phenomenon. City is responsible for the more technical aspects of the project.

The School is seeking to appoint an outstanding Research Fellow in the field of malware and specifically ransomware to work with Professor Chen and the project partners, University of Kent, University of Leeds, and Durham University to meet the aims and objectives of the project.

Responsibilities

The main responsibilites of a succesful candidate will be to work with the other project partners to investigate ransomware incidents and collect and analyse incident data. The candidate will also be involved in technical analysis of ransomware samples and assist the project team to understand the strategies of ransomware criminals.

Other areas of contribution will be in research administration, dissemination of research findings to conferences, journals and funding bodies, protection of IP and commercialisation activities.

Person Specification

The post holder should have a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field, with research experience or training related to information security.

Prior experience with malware analysis or computer forensics is highly desirable. Prior research in cyber crime or network security is desirable.
